MPs and the Plot

One thing that has become very apparent over the last year is that many MPs have lost the plot in its entirety when it comes to knowing how their constituents feel about everyday life. If the COVID-19 pandemic has proved anything, it is that - MPs have consistently voted for lockdowns, restrictions, tiers (and more tears), job losses and both health and economic catastrophe, regardless of the effect on everyday life for ordinary people.

Yet they do so on the back of some £80,000 per year of taxpayer's cash - your money. That's what MPs are paid and paid with money taken from you by law. Nobody actually 'likes' paying tax but we accept that we have to and in a free and democratic society, we give our consent for it to be taken. And of course, taxes also pay for everything else a UK government does.

In return for that however, we expect things to be run properly. With thought and care. And there is the question - are they? The answer is without any doubt, no.

COVID-19 is not a hoax. It is a disease that can have fatal results. But the key word is 'can'. Not will, or must or any other word with the same or similar meaning. Just 'can'. And the sad fact is many, many people feel that MPs have not been truthful over the disease.

That is the crux of it - the truth. What also needs to be kept in mind is that the government is drawn from MPs. Government ministers are not from any other group or anywhere else; they stand for election and the only one that is guaranteed a place in government is the leader of their party, who gets to be Prime Minister, the PM. And it is the PM who picks the rest of the gang, those who become 'The Government'.

But if the people feel they are being lied to, there is nothing to stop them voting the incumbent out and somebody else in. Boris Johnson's constituency is Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Retaining it at the next general election is not a given; it could be that if enough voters are not satisfied with him, he will not only cease to be PM but an MP also. It is also worth pointing out the right next door is the constituency of Hayes & Harlington. The MP is John McDonnell, as hard left as one could wish to find. So Prime Minister Johnson would do well to keep in mind that he is not 'The Boss'.

The British people are.
